Course Description
|
Children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)
present with specific behaviors and challenges
throughout their day.
Participants who attend this seminar will gain an
understanding of
current information regarding SPD,
including typically seen characteristics and
subtypes.
You will learn a variety of
effective tips and
treatment strategies that can be used
immediately in the school and home settings. Ms.
Bialer will share many of her new, low cost
effective, Low Tech Specs appropriate for on the
spot intervention.
This seminar is interactive in style, has multiple
videos, labs. Practitioners, teachers and parents
will be exposed to the underlying
neurophysiological foundations and theory on brain
processing needed to establish rationales for
treatment selection. Functional outcomes of
treatment will be maximized by exploring new
concepts in self regulation and sensory pairing.

Course Objectives
|
Upon completion of this training participants will:
1. Understand Sensory
processing Disorder and subtypes
2. Understand the
underlying treatment strategies that address each
subtype
3. Be more familiar in
identifying behaviors of children in particular
SPD subtypes
4. Understand Emotional
Modulation Disorder and Self Regulation
5. Create Self Regulation
Programs
6. Understand the neural
mechanisms that are utilized when choosing
treatment techniques for the SPD population
7. Be able to utilize
everyday objects to meet many of the needs of
children with SPD
8. Create more effective
strategies for the home & school environments to
address specific behaviors i.e.: Sensory diets
9. Understand alternative
treatment methods for the school & home
environments; Brain Gym

Speaker
|
Doreit S. Bialer, MA, OTR/L
is a nationally recognized Occupational Therapist
with over 19 years of experience working with SPD
in children and adolescents. She is
certified in NDT (Pediatrics and Adults), and in
the administration and Interpretation of the
Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests. Ms. Bialer
is an independent contractor in multiple public
schools in Nassau County and has a large private
practice and SI clinic with a focus on pre-school
and school-age children.
She has published articles on related
topics, and has provided numerous clinical
workshops on Sensory Integration, Handwriting, and
on School Based Therapy.
Ms. Bialer received an Advanced Masters
Degree in Occupational Therapy from New York
University and has been an adjunct instructor in
Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology at York College.
Ms. Bialer is proud to announce the exciting new
book: Inexpensive Solutions for Children
with Sensory Processing Disorder and Other Sensory
Motor Challenges; published by Future
Horizons, Inc, authored by Doreit S. Bialer,
MA,OTR/L co-author Dr. Lucy Jane Miller, Ph.D, OTR
and the OT staff at the STAR CENTER. This book
will be available for release Fall 2011.
Ms. Bialer is currently
enrolled in the Occupational Therapy Doctorate
program at Rocky Mountain University, pursuing her
interest in children with Sensory Processing
Disorder. She was involved in an intensive
mentorship program with Dr. Lucy J Miller and Dr.
Schoen at the Star Center in Colorado during July
2010.
